I bought a new notebook preloaded with vista home basic

I let windows load and do it's thing and then it asked me to restart

Since then it is impossible for me to get past the welcome screen in regular mode

First I thought it was password related but I can logon in safe mode with my password

In any case I disabled the password in safe mode but still I can't get past the welcome screen in regular mode......its possible in safe mode startup though

Does anyone know what I can do?

FYI: there are no programs loaded on the notebook and its not connected to the internet

    Step 4: Repair Windows

If the above steps do not work, you can try to repair Windows Vista using the installation disk:
  9. Insert the Windows Vista installation disc.
  10. Restart the computer and boot from the installation disc.
  11. Choose your language, time, and keyboard input.
  12. Click "Repair your computer."
  13. Select the operating system to repair and then choose "Startup Repair."

Step 5: Check for Driver Issues

  14. Boot into Safe Mode.
  15. Disable any recently installed drivers that may be causing the issue.
  16. Check the Event Viewer for any error messages related to drivers.

Step 6: Create a New User Account

  17. Boot into Safe Mode.
  18. Create a new user account with administrative privileges.
  19. Restart the computer and log in with the new account to see if the issue persists.

    Step 7: Check for Malware

Run a full system scan in Safe Mode with your antivirus software to check for any malware or malicious software causing the login issue.

Step 8: Check Hard Drive Health

In Safe Mode, you can use tools like Check Disk to scan and repair potential errors on your hard drive. If none of these steps resolve the issue, consider performing a clean installation of Windows Vista. Remember to back up your important data before proceeding with any drastic measures. Feel free to try these steps and let me know if you encounter any issues along the way.
