Windows 8 New windows 8 laptop---windows update not working

I have tried a number of times to download the windows updates. It shows that there are 71, but it won't download them. I tried the windows update troubleshooter which showed not fixed and missing or corrupt files detected. Can anyone tell me how to find out which files and how to fix them??? Thanks for any help. It won't let me upgrade to 8.1 either.
 
Solution
One thing done to repair certain problems on Windows 8 is opening an Administrative command prompt and running the command:


DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

It should check the system and correct certain types of problems. After you run that, you might want to run:

SFC /scannow to see if it finds any corrupt system files.
