Windows 7 Nothing is working!

Had a lovely new Sony VPC laptop with Windows 7, following the death of my old one.

Anyway, working lovely for a month. Tried to plub my iphone usb in yesterday to transfer some pics, and the comp wouldn't recognise it. Didn't appear in windows explorer, device manager, anywhere at all, although the sound for 'new usb device plugged in' was played. then tried my external usb hard drive - exact same problem.

then i tried my built in webcam - didnt work.

nothing bloody works. what on earth is going on?

Having done some research it appears lots of people are having USB issues. Have tried some of the suggested solutions, like turning off and removing the battery. Reinstalling drivers, system restore.

Nothing has worked. This is spectacularly infuriating.

Any help much appreciated.
