Hi All,

I have been trying for about a month to install an nvidia driver to be able to fully experience windows 7, but I have tried everything and cant seem to get it to work out. I know this issue has been tossed around a lot (trust me, Ive read as many threads as I could find) but it wold be great if someone could help me troubleshoot as I am out of ideas.

Here's what Ive got:

Intel Core 2 Duo 2 GHz
4 GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 8600M GS
HP Pavilion dv9000

I have tried tons of drivers from laptopvideo2go, some give me a BSOD around nvlddmkm.sys, some just end up giving a blank screen after bootup.

In my device manager it says VGA controller, not my video card. In everest it recognizes my video card. Initially when I install a driver my video card will show in device manager befor I reboot, but of course once I reboot it gives BSOD or black screen.

Anyone have any ideas what I could do to get around this? I would love to have a driver installed and be able to use aero. I have tried the newest drivers and older drivers. Some I get the "you do not have the appropriate drivers installed" bit. Or some say I have an incorrect card or something.

Thanks

Clean Driver Install: - Before installing any new driver, it is crucial to perform a clean install to remove any remnants of the previous driver installations. You can use tools like Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to completely remove old drivers before installing new ones. 2. Compatibility Check: - Ensure the driver version you are installing is compatible with both your GPU model (GeForce 8600M GS) and the version of Windows 7 you're using. 3. Safe Mode Installation: - Try installing the driver in Safe Mode to prevent conflicts that might be causing the BSOD or black screen issues. 4. Driver Signing: - Windows 7 might have driver signature enforcement enabled. You can disable this feature to allow the installation of unsigned drivers, but this should be done cautiously. 5. Manual Installation: - Instead of using automated installers, try manually installing the driver through the Device Manager. You can choose to update the driver manually and point to the driver INF file you downloaded. 6. Device Identification: - Verify that Windows is correctly identifying your GPU. If it's showing as a generic VGA controller, it might not be utilizing the correct driver. 7. BIOS Update: - Check if there are any BIOS updates available for your HP Pavilion dv9000. Sometimes, BIOS updates can help with hardware compatibility. 8. System Restore: - If you've made changes that resulted in crashes, consider using System Restore to revert your system to a point before the driver installations that caused issues. 9. Temporary Disables: - Temporarily disable any antivirus software, as it might interfere with the driver installation process. By trying these steps, you should be able to diagnose and potentially resolve the issues you're facing with installing the NVIDIA driver for your GeForce 8600M GS on Windows 7. If you encounter any specific errors or issues during these steps, feel free to provide more details for further assistance.
