I have just built a top spec PC due to my old one crashin and dieing. In my old one I had a dual HDD setup, one for windows and one for all my precious stuff. I put my data drive (precious stuff) in my new computer and when it loads up it says "NTLDR is missing" and won't boot into vista ultimate 64 bit edition. Without it, the computer boots fine. My old version of windows was XP. Can anybody suggest a fix so that I can save all my stuff. There is too much to conveniently burn to DVD and then transfer and I was hoping to do a straight cut and paste.

Solution
It seems like the error message you're encountering, "NTLDR is missing," is a common issue related to the Windows Vista boot loader not finding the necessary files to start up the operating system. This issue often happens when there are conflicts with different versions of Windows or when the boot sector is not configured correctly. You can try the following steps to potentially resolve the "NTLDR is missing" error and access the data on your second hard drive:

Method 1: Fixing the NTLDR is Missing Error

  1. Insert Windows Vista Installation Disc: If you have the Windows Vista installation disc, you can use it to fix the boot loader.

  1. Insert Windows Vista Installation Disc: If you have the Windows Vista installation disc, you can use it to fix the boot loader.
  2. Boot from the Installation Disc:
    • Insert the Windows Vista installation disc into your optical drive.
    • Restart your computer and boot from the DVD drive to access the Windows setup.
    []Access System Recovery Options:
    • Choose your language and click "Next."
    • Select "Repair your computer."
    • Choose the operating system you want to repair.
    • Click on "Startup Repair."
    [
    ]Run the Startup Repair:
    • Windows will attempt to fix the boot issue automatically.

Method 2: Manually Repair NTLDR Issue

    []Copy NTLDR and NTDETECT.com Files:
    • Locate the "NTLDR" and "NTDETECT.COM" files on your Windows XP drive.
    • Copy these files to the root directory of your Windows Vista drive.
    [
    ]Use Bootrec:
    • If the above method doesn't work, you can try the command-line utility bootrec.exe.
    • Boot from the Windows Vista installation disc.
    • Choose the "Command Prompt."
    • Enter the following commands:
      Code:
       bootrec /fixmbr bootrec /fixboot bootrec /rebuildbcd
  3. Restart your PC and see if the error is resolved.

Method 3: Using Data Recovery Tools

If you find it challenging to fix the boot issue and access your precious data directly, you can use data recovery tools like EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, Recuva, or TestDisk to recover your files from the HDD.

    Backup Reminder

It's always recommended to back up important data regularly to avoid situations like this in the future. Feel free to try these steps and let me know if you encounter any issues or need further assistance!
