Windows 7 Permanent Connection Of External Storage

I have a external storage device that I have connected via USB and is used for backup only..
I think I am going to disconnect it and only connect it when I have OS updates. Is this OK to do it this way. Thanks
 
It's probably OK as long as you remove it properly, that is click on remove hardware and wait for prompt. The downside is if you keep messing with USB cable you may eventually mess up the port in PC or HD. I'd just unplug power if it doesn't have power switch.

OK thanks for the info

I have a WD My Book Essential 500GB which does have a offf/on switch.
I wasn't sure how it worked but I do now.
 
I've seen several people on the WD board complain if broken ports on the drive. It's only logical to assume the same can happen to the PC port.
