Boot time from pressing the startup button to everything finished loading and ready to use on my netbook is 20 seconds.
System Configuration:
Acer Aspire One with gateway bios mod
-CPU: Intel Atom N270 1.6ghz with hyperthreading
-Graphics: Intel GMA 950
-Ram: 2x512MB (1 onboard hynix and 1 samsung DDR2 667 CL4)
-HDD: Western Digital Scorpio Blue 160GB (1 platter hdd i think) with 65MB/s sequential read on boot files
-1x4GB Adata Class 6 "Turbo" with 22MB/s sustained read on PCI express Jmicro multicard reader
Optimization:
-optimized and defragmented hdd with diskeeper premiere pro
-lowered menu delay time
-adjusted TCIP max half open to 50 (I know it breaks HTML regulations and puts strains on servers, but that's the only way to fully use my 30Mbit/s connection).

Features:
Full aero enabled
Adobe CS3 Master Collection Suite
Microsoft Office Ultimate + Outlook
Microsoft Encarta 2009 + Microsoft Math
Internet Explorer 8
Foobar 2000
Kmplayer
small apps not worth mentioning
Windows Experience Index:
Processor: 2.2
Memory: 4.4
Graphics: 2.2
Gaming Graphics: 3.0
Primary HDD: 5.4

Boot time?

A clarification is in order here. What is the definition of "Boot Time"?

Here are my times to each stage of the start-up process:

Power on to "Starting Windows" = 20sec
................... to "Log In" = 44sec
................... to Desktop = 1:02
................... to Ready * = 1:22

* By "Ready" I mean the toolbar and system notification area are fully populated.

optimized:
Disabled stuff i don't use, tablet support and media center ect.
defragmented by smart defrag.
reduced size of page file, from 2350 to 1500.( i know page is large for a reason but free disc space is important too )

40-45 seconds with Ati Tray Tool, Avast!, Notebook Hardware Control and Process Explorer starting at boot time.
See my Sig below for detailed system specs. Machine was purchased in April 2006.

This boot time compares very favorably with my XP Pro-SP3 install on the first physical partition of this machines HDD.

XP boots in about 1 minute 30 seconds.

My computer right now boots at about 15 seconds (from "Starting Windows" to desktop). The logoff takes (whether I reboot or shut down) 10 seconds (from "Logging Off" to full system shutdown).

Gigabyte GA-M55plus S3G rev 2.1
AMD Athlon X2 5600+ 2.9 Ghz "Brisbane"
4GB Kingston DDR2 800 RAM
512MB NVidia Geforce 8400 GS (my "ill-fated" video card until I upgrade)
320GB Western Digital SATA drive

Startup programs: WinAMP Agent, Unlocker Assistant, OpenOffice 3.0 Quickstarter, sound card CP.

When you're talking about "boots" do you mean from the point where you press the start button to everything becomes responsive and usable?

I've edited my post to clarify what I meant by "boot". Like I said, I really don't pay as much attention to the whole boot process since I do a couple other things as the POST goes through. That's why I said that I count the "Starting Windows" to desktop with full functionality.

I wonder what kind of computer
rl2k05
has. He claimed his computer can boot under 10 seconds.
Probably a hybrid drive with small flash drive section. Does Win 7 support placing boot info on the flash drive portion of a hybrid drive like Vista? If so that would make for a quick boot time.

I consider my computer fully booted when Homer says "To start press anykey, Where's the anykey". I've replaced the startup sound with the Homer .wav, when I hear Homie my machine is fully functional.

Hmm.. I think I sort of placed my boot fine on an SD card. I used my SD card as readyboost on an PCIE card reader (almost the same as intel turbo memory) thus possibly decreasing the boot time.

If I consider my comptuer "fully booted" starting to count when windows *starts*, I can get it to 8-10 seconds as well. Otherwise, it's a 20 second boot up from bios beginning to post until everything is responsive and I can start anything I want in windows.

2 min., 15 sec

From pressing "start" button until everything is loaded and ready for service is 2 min, 15 sec. This includes Live Mesh loading and synching, printer loaded and ready to print, Windows Home server recognized and "shaking hands" and everything that I can observe being "loaded and situated" and ready to perform work. This compares with approximately equal or slightly slower times in XP and Vista times on the order of three times as long. I have never "stop watched" Vista or XP (nor 7 until right now), but I can press the start button on Vista Home Premium and go to the kitchen and not only pour a cup of coffee, but drink it and pour a second cup and come back and wait for the Live Mesh, Logitech mouse, and HP printer to finish loading.

I'd msconfig that computer. That's desperate.
