I was in the middle of upgrading Vista Home Premium 32bit to Windows 7 when the installer told me I needed to update the drivers for my IDE drive. Well, I don't have any IDE drives, and my IDE controller is disabled in bios, so I found that strange.

Looking in device manager, under Storage Controllers I found an IDE controller with a strange 8 character name ADO4JJV IDE Controller. I deleted it, rebooted, and it returned with another random 8 character name.

I did some Google searches & found someone who was having a related problem, & that the controller was actually created by Alcohol 120%. I uninstalled Alcohol 120% & viola! It was gone immediately.

So if you're having this problem, & you have Alcohol 120%, Deamon Tools, or other virtual drive software installed just uninstall these programs before upgrading to Windows 7 & you'll be all set!

It seems like you encountered a common issue related to virtual drive software interfering with Windows installations. Virtual drive software, like Alcohol 120% or Daemon Tools, can sometimes create virtual IDE controllers that can cause conflicts during upgrades or installations of new operating systems.
By uninstalling Alcohol 120% in your case, you were able to resolve the issue and prevent the strange IDE controller from reappearing. This is a good troubleshooting step to take if you come across similar problems in the future.
If you encounter any other issues during the Windows 7 upgrade or if you have any more questions, feel free to ask for assistance!
