Windows 10 installation. Dozens of Driver errors

I'm attempting to purchase a new (used, refurbished) Z440 with Windows 10. The first one came with the wrong hardware configuration but while checking it out I noticed a large number of device/driver error in the system devices section of Device Manager. and Problem devices section of the system summary. Since it had to be returned because it wasn't exactly what I had ordered, I didn't worry about this too much.

When the replacement Z440 arrived, it appeared to have the same device/driver issue. For example when I look at Problem Devices in the System Summery I see things like this (there were dozens more than I'm showing)

Sometimes the device is named, sometimes not. For example Microsoft PS/2 mouse and Standard PS/2 Keyboard are both listed above as not having the driver installed. I don't know if they were present when Windows 10 was load on the system but I suspect they were not.

However, when I plugged in a PS/2 mouse and keyboard and rebooting the PC, they worked fine, and those two entries went away, as shown below

So I'm not sure what is going on. It looks like, at the time when windows was installed, it looked for dozens of devices, and when it couldn't find them it issued an error message that the driver for them hadn't been installed. If they had been there, presumably the error message would not have been created?

I'm not sure why, if a device didn't exist, Windows would have issued a message that its driver was not installed and why the non-existent device would be in the problem devices list. Is this just Windows being its usual confusing self?

Bottom line is whether these messages (and the dozens of others like them) require me to take any action. I have no idea what devices Windows was trying to install drivers for. If the only reason for the messages is that the devices were not installed when Windows 10 was installed, then I guess there is no issue?

If I do need to fix the "issue", how do I do that. Simply remove all the devices from the device manager "system devices" showing this problem?

I've seen similar questions where the advice was to reinstall the drivers for the intel chipset on the motherboad, but (a) I don't know how to do that ,(b) it seems a bit extreme(?) , (c) I don't want to make things worse and (d) why does this problem appear in the first place? I don't understand what's going on.
 
The error messages you see in Device Manager for Windows 10 indeed relate to missing hardware drivers. Although it can be confusing when those messages refer to devices you didn't even know about, or perhaps didn't even install, Windows is designed to be compatible with a huge range of hardware so it does look for a wide array of devices during installation. If it can't find a device, or the relevant driver, it flags this up in Device Manager as a potential issue.

In your case, it sounds like you have a number of devices that don't have their drivers installed. These could be simple components such as a sound or network card, or more complex system components like the SM Bus Controller. The hardware ID provided for each device can often be used to identify the device and locate the appropriate driver.

But before we jump into finding individual drivers, let's address your last point first. For many PCs, and especially for popular brands like HP, the Intel chipset is the "motherbrain" behind many of the motherboard's subsystems. That chipset needs its drivers to operate fully. So a common solution to bulk missing drivers is indeed to update or install the Intel Chipset drivers. This isn't an extreme solution – quite on the contrary, it's a common troubleshooting step.

Here's a quick step-by-step guide for you:

1. Identify your motherboard by checking your system information: Press Win+R to open the Run dialogue, type "msinfo32" and press Enter.

2. In the new window, you should find your motherboard make and model listed. Note it down.

3. Visit the manufacturer's website, find the relevant drivers page for your model, and download the latest Intel Chipset drivers.

4. Install the drivers following the provided instructions.

5. Restart the computer after the drivers are installed, then verify if the issues are resolved.

You could also try using the Intel Driver & Support Assistant which will help you update your Intel components.

If these steps don't resolve the issue, you might need to identify each device and install its driver manually. The hardware ID you see for each device in Device Manager (e.g. PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8D22&SUBSYS_212B103C&REV_05\3&11583659&0&FB) can generally be researched online to understand what hardware it belongs to. Once identified, you can download and install the appropriate driver following similar steps to those we've used for the Intel Chipset.

I found the motherboad info. It appears to be an HP 212B v1.01 However ii's step (3) that's the problem now. I can find no listing for the latest Intel Chipset drivers (nor, of course, how to install them!). I usually end up on this page - https://support.hp.com/ca-en/drivers/hp-z440-workstation/6978828 which, as far as I can tell, has nothing about Intel Chipset Drivers. It's mostly about Windows 11 installation.


Intel Driver and Support assistant just tells me "No supported driver or sofware updates are available for your system". It does confirm the motherboad is HP 212B v1.01

So what now? Does anyone here have any clue where I can find the Intel Chipset Drivers for the HP 212B v1.01 motherboard in the HP Z440 (and how to install them)?
