Hey guys, I got a problem with my laptop. My old laptop crashed some weeks ago. It doesn't work anymore if I press the power button. So I took the hdd and connected it with desktop-pc to rescue the data. I had to get the rights for the user folder and windows got it automatically for me. But now the folders like my pictures or my music are empty. Have I make a mistake? Can I get my data back?
Greetings Lucas.

It sounds like the issue you're facing with your laptop's hard drive when connected to a desktop PC might be related to user permissions and how Windows handles data access from that drive. Here are steps you can take to potentially resolve the problem and access your data:

Steps to Resolve Missing Data Issue:

  1. Ownership and Permissions: Check and ensure that you have taken full ownership of the user folders on the old laptop's hard drive. Follow these steps:
    • Right-click on the user folder (e.g., My Pictures, My Music) that appears empty, then choose "Properties."
    • Go to the "Security" tab and select "Advanced."

    • Apply the changes and confirm.
[]Hidden Files: Sometimes, files may appear missing due to them being set as hidden by the Operating System. To display hidden files, follow these steps:
    • Open File Explorer, go to the "View" tab, and tick "Hidden items" to show hidden files and folders.

]Data Recovery Software: If the data is still inaccessible, consider using data recovery software like Recuva, EaseUS Data Recovery, or Stellar Data Recovery to scan and recover missing files from the hard drive.
  2. Create Backups: Always create backups of recovered data to prevent permanent data loss in case of any unexpected issues during recovery. By following these steps, you should be able to recover the missing data from your old laptop's hard drive after connecting it to your desktop PC.
