Windows 7 registration key not accept ed

I have a netbook that originally had XP installed. I upgraded to Win7 and experienced no problems. Thought I would try Linux Ubuntu...too much for me. Had to download Gparted to slick disk. Worked well, reinstalled Win7 using a legally purchased upgrade disk...no probs until activation time. Won't accept the activation code. So am I supposed to purchase a full version of win7? Not likely...the old net book is to slow for win8. Any ideas?
