I have been running RRAS for some time now to allow me to VPN into my network for administration. I am not exactly sure what has caused my issue but when I start the system in hangs after logging in. I have used MSCONFIG to narrow down the issue to Routing and Remote access service. I am not sure how to repair just that service. (remove reinstall, troubleshoot the service itself. Any thoughts?

Solution
It seems like you are encountering an issue with the Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS) on your system, which is causing it to hang after logging in. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue with the RRAS service:

Troubleshooting Steps for RRAS Service Issue:

  1. Disable RRAS Service: Try disabling the RRAS service temporarily to see if the system boots up without any issues. You can do this by:
    • Press Win + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter.

[]Run System File Checker (SFC) Scan:

[]Run System File Checker (SFC) Scan:
    • Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
    • Type sfc /scannow and press Enter. This will scan and repair any corrupted system files that might be affecting the RRAS service.
    [
    ]Check Event Viewer Logs:
    • Open Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc) and check for any related error or warning messages under Windows Logs > System. This can provide more detailed information about what is causing the issue.
    []Reinstall RRAS Service Components:
    • You can try to reinstall the RRAS service components by removing and re-adding the role through the Server Manager:
      • Open Server Manager.
      • Go to Manage > Remove Roles and Features.
      • Follow the wizard to remove the RRAS role.
      • Restart the server.
      • Add the RRAS role back through the Add Roles and Features wizard.
    [
    ]Check for Updates:
    • Ensure that your system is up to date with the latest Windows updates. Sometimes, updates can resolve compatibility issues related to services like RRAS.
    []Check Dependencies:
    • Ensure that all dependencies of the RRAS service are running without any issues. Check if any services that RRAS depends on are stopped or not functioning correctly.
    [
    ]System Restore:
    • If the issue started recently, consider performing a system restore to a point where RRAS was working correctly.
  2. Check for Third-Party Software Interference:
    • Some third-party applications or security software might interfere with the RRAS service. Temporarily disable or uninstall any recently installed software to see if it resolves the issue.

Remember to Back Up Your Data Before Making Changes

Before making any significant changes to your system, it's always advisable to back up your important data to prevent any potential data loss. These steps should help you troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue with the RRAS service hanging your system after logging in. If the issue persists, feel free to provide more details for further assistance.
