Is there a workaround for the inability to use:
"*

[TD="width: 16"] / [/TD]
[TD="width: 16"] : [/TD]
[TD="width: 16"] < [/TD]
[TD="width: 16"] > [/TD]
[TD="width: 16"] ? [/TD]
[TD="width: 16"] \ [/TD]
[TD="width: 16"] |
[/TD]
in file/folder names..?

No - because they each have their own significance within the folder/filename syntax so would lead to ambiguous interpretation by the operating/file handling system.
