A neighbough of mine has brought me a stricken laptop.

She explained it had been running slow and after restarting the recovery screen appeared.

At this stage a simple key press should initiate the process however the keyboard is unresponsive.

Does anybody have any ideas how I could recover this laptop and preserve the data on it?

Thank you.

The recovery menu will display after 3 non-clean shutdowns. I would start by simply powering the laptop off and back on again. Then do a regular backup and wipe/re-install if a clean install is what you're wanting to do otherwise just turn it off and on again.
