Get those testing caps on Ubuntu fans as the second alpha version of Ubuntu 10.10, the distro also known as Maverick Meerkat has been let loose and is available with updated packages, new features and still no love for closed source software.

The Alpha 2 is based on the 2.6.35-6.7 Linux kernel, and comes with GNOME 2.31, KDE 4.5 RC1, Qt 4.7 beta, support for the btrfs file system, new cloud-init features, a redesigned Ubuntu Software Center, and more (like the Unity interface being made default in Ubuntu Netbook Edition).

The Ubuntu 10.10 Alpha 2 can be downloaded in multiple flavors (Desktop, Server, Netbook, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, etc) from this page

Canonical releases Ubuntu 10.10 Alpha 3

Canonical and the Ubuntu developers have issued the third alpha of Ubuntu 10.10, code-named "Link Removed due to 404 Error". This development milestone is the last of three planned alpha releases, which will later be followed by a beta and a release candidate.

Ubuntu 10.10 Alpha 3 is based on the latest 2.6.35 Linux kernel and features version 2.31 of the GNOME desktop environment – the most recent development snapshot that will eventually become Link Removed due to 404 Error. Other changes include the addition of "Featured" and "Whats New" choice icons to the front page of the Ubuntu Software Centre, the Link Removed due to 404 Error and a number of various package updates, including Link Removed due to 404 Error, the latest 2.03 of the Transmission BitTorrent client and Link Removed due to 404 Error. Support for installing to the Btrfs file system in Ubuntu's alternative and server CD installer is also included in Ubuntu 10.10.

The developers remind users that, as with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised. However, users testing the release are encouraged to provide Link Removed due to 404 Error and report any bugs that they encounter.

More details about the development preview, including a list of known issues, can be found in the official release announcement and release notes. A list of planned features and changes for version 10.10 of Ubuntu is available on the Blueprints for Maverick page. Ubuntu 10.10 Alpha 3 is available to Link Removed due to 404 Error from the project's web site. Users currently running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a desktop system can upgrade by pressing Alt+F2 and typing "update-manager -d" (without the quotes) into the command box.
The final version of Maverick Meerkat is scheduled to be released on October 10th, 2010 (10/10/10). The latest stable version of Ubuntu is version 10.04, a long term support (LTS) release, code-named "Lucid Lynx", from April of this year.

Whats New In Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat Alpha 3

The Ubuntu Release Team has just announced the release of third alpha of Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat. This is an alpha release and, hence, is not meant for daily usage. It is meant for testing by developers and interested users.

This is what Martin Pitt from the Ubuntu Release Team wrote announcing the release:

Alpha 3 is the third in a series of milestone CD images that will be released throughout the Maverick development cycle. The Alpha images are known to be reasonably free of showstopper CD build or installer bugs, while representing a very recent snapshot of Maverick.

The third alpha brings a lot of new changes/features. Here are some:Linux Kernel 2.6.35

Ubuntu 10.10 Alpha 3 uses the Linux Kernel 2.6.35. This kernel includes a lot of security enhancements over the previous kernels. It also has some interesting new features like support for Apple’s Magic Mouse and faster packet transmission.

Ubuntu Software Center

The Ubuntu Software Center has undergone some changes. The main page now shows “Featured” applications and also has a “Whats New” section. It also supports plugins now.

Ubuntu Netbook Edition

The Ubuntu Netbook Edition now uses the Unity interface by default. Global menu also makes an appearance.

Kubuntu

In Kubuntu, KDE SC 4.5 RC is used for this release. As expected, the default browser has also been changed to rekonq.
