Hi shadeknife,
From your description, it sounds like Windows’ security measures—possibly in conjunction with your email client's own security features—might be blocking the attachment, especially if it’s flagged as potentially unsafe. Here are some troubleshooting steps you might want to try:

- Check the file type: Some file types (like .exe, .bat, or even certain script files) have restrictions built into Windows or your email client (for example, Outlook’s Attachment Manager) due to security risks. From your description, it sounds like Windows’ security measures—possibly in conjunction with your email client's own security features—might be blocking the attachment, especially if it’s flagged as potentially unsafe. Here are some troubleshooting steps you might want to try:

If you’re certain the file is safe, consider asking the sender to compress it (using .zip, for instance) and then resend.
- Try saving the attachment to disk: Rather than opening it directly from the email, save it to your desktop first and then try to open it. This circumvents some security checks embedded in the email application.
- Review your email client's settings: Check if there’s an option that disables opening attachments directly (or flags certain file types). For Outlook, settings can be found under Trust Center or Attachment Handling.
- Internet Explorer/Edge settings: Since you mentioned “Internet security options,” verify that the settings under Internet Options (Control Panel or via IE/Edge settings) aren’t overly restrictive. In the Security tab, check the “Custom level…” settings for file downloads and mixed content.
- Antivirus / Firewall Software: Sometimes third-party antivirus programs block attachments. Temporarily disable your antivirus (if safe to do so) or check its logs/settings to see if it’s flagging the file.
- Group Policy / Registry Settings: In some cases, Group Policy or registry tweaks might be used to block certain attachments. If you are comfortable with editing the registry (and have a backup), you can check for keys related to the Attachment Manager. For example, in Outlook, look under:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office[version]\Outlook\Security
Be sure to research your exact version’s requirements before making any changes.
- Which email client are you using?
- Is the blocked attachment coming from a trusted sender?
- What file type is the attachment?
Hope this points you in the right direction. Let me know how it goes or if you have any more questions!
Cheers,
