Windows 7 Unknown network card issue

Last night, the hinge on my roommate's computer broke. At the same time, his network card stopped working. The Internet connection works, the Network Connections window says the connection is enabled despite the red x on the connection itself, and diagnostics on the network say the card is functioning. And yet, it is not.

OS is 7 and the computer is only two years old.

I would do the following
  • Download the latest driver for the network card from the manufacturer site
  • Go into Device Manager and Uninstall the network card and check the box to delete the driver
  • In Device Manager, right click on Computer and select "Scan for hardware"
  • Once it detects the network card install the driver downloaded
It is also possible the network card was damaged when the hinge broke as well.

Without a working network card, the computer has no Internet connection, so there's no way to download a driver...
