OK so when I attempt to use any video player on an existing AVI file my system locks up and has to be rebooted. I have tried WMP, VLC (my preference) and KPS. They all react the same way, leads me to believe it is hardware and not a software issue,

Is 1 gig of ram enough for this system to operate properly and can this be the culprit?

Thanks

Solution
1GB is the minimum required RAM, but if Applications are causing the computer to crash...

how large is this file exactly? is it an HD video? does it play on your OS and if so what OS is that?
