I am installing Vista 32-bit home SP1 on my desktop as an upgrade to XP SP3. I got through all the steps and there were only 3 programs that I was told wouldn't work with Vista, but they wouldn't be a problem. Anyway, this all started at around 9pm last night (Thursday).

I went to bed at around 11pm and it was still doing its install thing. So I let it continue and just turned off the monitor. When I woke up this morning at 5:30am (Friday) it was still installing and was at 59% of the last step. An hour later when I left for work it was still at 59%. I just called home to check on it and it was still at 59% (this was around 9:30am).

There is no hard drive activity and there is no DVD activity. The progress indicator (three periods) are still going and I can click on the "x" to abort installation.

My question is, what do I do? Should I just turn it off and reboot and hope it will pick back up from where it is? Or should I try aborting and then reinstalling? It does give me a warning message that the system could become unstable when I click on the "x."

Any words of wisdom? Thanks!

It seems like your Windows Vista installation is stuck at 59% for quite some time without any activity. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve this issue:

Steps to Troubleshoot a Stuck Windows Vista Installation:

  1. Wait a Bit Longer: Sometimes, the installation process can take longer than expected. If there is no activity but the installation progress is still moving, wait a bit longer to see if it progresses.
  2. Reboot: If the installation seems completely stuck with no progress for an extended period, you can try rebooting the system. When you reboot, there might be an option to resume the installation from where it left off.
  3. Safe Mode: If the system fails to boot normally after the reboot, try booting into Safe Mode. This can sometimes help in resolving installation issues.
    • To enter Safe Mode, restart the computer and press the F8 key repeatedly before Windows starts loading.
[]Restart Installation: If rebooting doesn't work or if the installation keeps getting stuck at the same point, you might need to consider restarting the installation process. []Backup Data: If you decide to restart the installation, make sure to back up any important data on the system to prevent data loss during the process. []Check System Compatibility: Ensure that your hardware meets the requirements for running Windows Vista to avoid any compatibility issues that might be causing the installation to hang. []Check Installation Media: If possible, verify the installation media (DVD or USB) for any physical damage or corruption. A damaged installation media can cause installation issues.

    Words of Caution:

    • If you choose to abort the installation, it might lead to an unstable system. While it's an option, it's better to try other troubleshooting steps first before resorting to aborting the installation.
    • Always ensure your data is backed up before making any significant changes to the system. If you encounter any specific error messages or face difficulties during the process, feel free to provide more details for further assistance. Hopefully, these steps help you resolve the installation issue with Windows Vista on your desktop.
