Hi all. On a Windows Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V role I run a Windows Server 2008R2 host. Sometimes, when I initiate an RDP connection on the host, without being able to establish a pattern, it gives me a crash on the vms3cap.sys driver. The issue first appeared in October after a host update. I don't know exactly if RDP is the trigger, but it has happened twice so far and every time it crashes exactly when I initiated the RDP connection. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Solution
To address the issue with the vms3cap.sys driver causing crashes when initiating an RDP connection on your Windows Server 2008 R2 virtual host running on Hyper-V within Windows Server 2012 R2, you can follow these troubleshooting steps: 1. Update Integration Services: - Ensure that the Integration Services are up to date on the Windows Server 2008 R2 VM. Integration Services improve the functionality and performance of virtual machines running on Hyper-V. You can update them from the Hyper-V Manager console. 2. Update Hyper-V Host: - Make sure that your Hyper-V host running Windows Server 2012 R2 is fully patched and up to date with the latest updates from Microsoft. 3. Update Hyper-V Host: - Make sure that your Hyper-V host running Windows Server 2012 R2 is fully patched and up to date with the latest updates from Microsoft. 3. Check for Known Issues: - Look for any known issues related to vms3cap.sys driver crashes with RDP connections specific to your server configuration. Visit the Microsoft Support website and forums for any identified issues and potential solutions. 4. Hardware Pass-through Configuration: - Check if any hardware pass-through configurations are affecting the virtual machine's networking. Adjust the virtual network adapters or configurations related to the VM. 5. Memory and Resource Allocation: - Review the memory allocation and resources assigned to the virtual machine. Adjust the resources if needed to ensure the VM has sufficient resources to operate smoothly. 6. Check Event Viewer: - Examine the Event Viewer logs for more detailed informational and error messages regarding the crashes. This can provide insight into what might be triggering the driver crashes. 7. Run System File Checker: - Run the System File Checker (sfc /scannow) on the Windows Server 2008 R2 VM to check and fix any corrupted system files that might be contributing to the crashes. 8. Perform a Kernel Memory Dump: - Consider configuring your system to create kernel memory dumps when experiencing a crash. This will provide more detailed information about the crash that may help in diagnosing the issue. If the issue persists, performing further analysis based on the logs generated during the crashes or seeking Microsoft support for Hyper-V driver-related problems might be necessary.
