Hello,

When I turn on my wi-fi (I have a Compaq Presario R3000 and a Broadcom 800.11.b WLAN card which is internal) Vista completely freezes.

When I press the button again (as if to turn wi-fi off) Vista works fine again.

Vista has recognised and installed the card, I just cannot seem to use it, does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

It seems like you are facing an issue with your Wi-Fi card causing Vista to freeze when you try to turn it on. This could be due to driver issues, conflicts, or hardware problems. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this issue:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Update Wi-Fi Card Drivers:
    • Ensure that you have the latest drivers for your Broadcom 800.11.b WLAN card installed. You can visit the manufacturer's website or use Windows Update to check for any available driver updates.
    []Check for Conflicts:
    • Sometimes, conflicts between drivers or software can cause issues. Check the Device Manager for any conflicts or errors related to your Wi-Fi card.

    [
    ]Disable Power Saving Options:
    • In Device Manager, you can check the Power Management settings for your Wi-Fi card and disable the option to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."
    []Run Windows Update:
    • Make sure your Windows Vista is fully updated. Sometimes, system updates can also address compatibility issues.
    [
    ]Check for Viruses and Malware:
    • Perform a full system scan using a reliable antivirus program to rule out any malware-related issues.
    []Test in Safe Mode:
    • Try to turn on your Wi-Fi in Safe Mode to see if the issue persists. If it works fine in Safe Mode, it could indicate a third-party software conflict.
    [
    ]Reset TCP/IP Stack:
    • Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run the following commands:
      Code:
netsh int ip reset netsh winsock reset
    []Check Event Viewer:
    • Look for any error messages or warnings related to your Wi-Fi card in the Event Viewer to gather more information about the issue.
    [
    ]Contact Support:
    • If none of the above steps resolve the problem, contacting Compaq or Broadcom support for further assistance might be necessary.

      Additional Tips:

      • Ensure your system meets the minimum requirements for the Wi-Fi card.
      • Consider testing the Wi-Fi card on another computer to see if the issue persists.
Try these steps and see if they help in resolving the problem with your Wi-Fi card on your Compaq Presario R3000 running Windows Vista. Let me know if you need further assistance or if you have any other questions!
