Hi,
I have Windows 7 with SP1 and am running Internet Explorer 9. At times when I try closing a window with the red X at the upper right, the screen freezes. It seems to happen only with a second window that is opened in a website. If I go to task mgr. it shows it running and I can click to end it there, and then it returns to the first window which I can then close normally with the mouse. I can also close it with the ALT/F4 keys directly. It only happens with the mouse. Any ideas? Thanks. Tom

Solution
Tom, It seems like you are experiencing a specific issue with Internet Explorer 9 on Windows 7, where the second window opened in a website freezes when you try to close it using the red X at the upper right corner. Since you can close it using Task Manager or the ALT/F4 keys, it indicates that there might be an issue with how the browser is handling the window close operation via the mouse. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve this issue: 1. Update Internet Explorer: Make sure you have all the latest updates for Internet Explorer 9. Although it's an older version, ensuring it's fully updated might help resolve some compatibility issues. 2. Disable Add-ons: Sometimes, browser add-ons can cause issues...

Try disabling all add-ons and then check if the problem persists. If it doesn't freeze without add-ons, you can enable them one by one to identify the problematic one. 3. Reset Internet Explorer Settings: Resetting Internet Explorer settings to default can help resolve various issues. To do this: - Open Internet Explorer. - Go to Tools (gear icon) > Internet Options. - Go to the Advanced tab. - Click on the Reset button. 4. Check for Malware: Malware can also cause unexpected behavior. Run a full antivirus scan on your system to ensure it's not infected. 5. Clear Browser Cache: Clearing the cache and cookies in Internet Explorer could resolve certain issues related to browsing data. 6. Upgrade Internet Explorer or Use Another Browser: Internet Explorer 9 is quite outdated and no longer supported by Microsoft. Consider upgrading to a newer version of Internet Explorer or switch to a more modern browser like Chrome, Firefox, or Microsoft Edge. Try these steps and see if they help resolve the freezing issue when closing the second window in Internet Explorer. Let me know if you need further assistance.
