In a recent update, Microsoft has rolled out a new preview build of Windows 11 that brings a significant enhancement for webcam users: the ability to stream from a single camera to multiple applications simultaneously. This functionality targets a common frustration among users who need to use their webcam across different platforms and applications, such as video conferencing software and streaming services.
Historically, Windows 11 limited webcam usage to a single application at any given time. This meant that if you were on a Zoom call and wanted to open the Camera app, you would be met with a “Close other apps” notification, effectively locking you out of the ability to utilize the webcam across multiple applications. This restriction is addressed in the latest build, version 26120.1542, which is now accessible to users in the Developer channel. The new “Multi-app Camera” feature allows users to overcome the previous limitations. After this update, you can initiate streaming from a webcam to multiple applications simultaneously, vastly improving your multi-tasking capabilities during online meetings, webinars, or even casual video chats.
