Microsoft has introduced a new feature in Windows 11 that dynamically adjusts the size of taskbar icons based on the number of open applications. This functionality aims to enhance taskbar space management by offering three configurations:
  • Permanent: Icons remain small at all times.
  • Never: Icons retain their original size, regardless of the number of open applications.
  • Progressive Scaling: Icons shrink only when the taskbar becomes overcrowded.
This feature is currently available in the Windows 11 Beta Channel, allowing users to test and provide feedback before its broader release. To activate this feature, users enrolled in the Windows Insider Program with the latest beta version can navigate to Taskbar settings by right-clicking on the taskbar, then select Taskbar Behaviors, and choose the desired option under Combine taskbar buttons and hide labels.
While this feature may be beneficial for devices with smaller screens, users with larger displays might find the icons excessively small, especially at higher resolutions. Therefore, it's advisable to test the feature and adjust the settings according to personal preference and screen size.
This development reflects Microsoft's ongoing efforts to refine the Windows 11 user experience by incorporating user feedback and introducing features that cater to diverse user needs.
