Hi guys I'm new to this forum and I hope i didn't miss a solution to this in a search but...

i see many ways to do this with home groups and such but i cannot use those solutions since this is a Domain network.

I am trying to share a printer attached to a local PC on our domain network. It works for all other windows 7 computers but... if i try to connect to it with a windows XP machine it says i do not have access rights i cannot even connect to the PC under network explorer. but any windows 7 machine can just fine so i know it is sharing properly. any ideas?

It seems like you're encountering an issue with sharing a printer attached to a local PC on a domain network, specifically with Windows XP machines not being able to access it while Windows 7 machines can. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

Check Windows XP Network Settings:

  1. Network Discovery: Ensure that network discovery is enabled on the Windows XP machine.
  2. Workgroup: Confirm that the Windows XP machine is in the same workgroup as the Windows 7 machines.

    Printer Sharing Configuration:

  4. Guest Account: If...

    Printer Sharing Configuration:

  3. Shared Printer Permissions: Check the permissions on the shared printer to ensure that everyone has the necessary permissions to access it.
  4. Guest Account: If necessary, enable the guest account in Windows 7 and give it permission to access the shared printer.

    Firewall Settings:

  5. Windows Firewall: Temporarily disable the Windows Firewall on the Windows 7 machine to see if the Windows XP machine can connect. If it works, adjust the firewall settings to allow access from the XP machine.
  6. Third-Party Firewall: If you have third-party firewall software installed, make sure it's not blocking access to the shared printer.

    Network Protocols:

  7. SMB Version: Ensure that the SMB version supported by Windows XP is enabled on the Windows 7 machine.
  8. LM & NTLM Compatibility: Check the local security policy on the Windows 7 machine to enable compatibility with older systems that use LM and NTLM authentication.

    Additional Steps:

  9. Driver Compatibility: Ensure that the printer driver is compatible with Windows XP.
  10. Printer Sharing Troubleshooter: Run the printer sharing troubleshooter on both the Windows 7 and XP machines to diagnose any specific issues. By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot the connectivity issue between your Windows 7 and Windows XP machines when sharing a printer on a domain network.
