Hello all,

Wow, this seems to be a great forum. Found a lot of information already.

Also about using Windows 7 on a Dell Latitude 600. However, I have a little issue with the integrated controller, have not ran across any postings about that. I take it this would be the right forum section to ask?

Well, I installed Windows 7, works fine, except the Broadcom 570x integrated controller is not supported. I was unable to get an updated one (not even for Vista) from Broadcom, my revision is not listed on their page.

So before I try multiple other drivers, has anyone ever ran across this issue?

BTW: Even though with 4GB of RAM and 1TB harddrive, Windows 7 is even slower than XP. Not that I expected anything less, after all, am mainly running Linux (yes without any issues), so I am spoiled!

Any input would be greatly appreciated. I run a boot manager and multiple OS's, would like to play with Windows 7.

Ciao!

Hello, It's great to hear that you're finding useful information on the forum! Addressing the issue with the Broadcom 570x integrated controller on Windows 7 for your Dell Latitude D600, there are a few steps you can take to potentially resolve this:

Steps to Resolve Broadcom 570x Integrated Controller Issue:

  1. Manual Driver Installation:
    • Try manually installing the driver by:
      • Downloading the driver from Broadcom's website (even if it's not listed for your revision).
      • Extract the downloaded files if needed.
      • Go to Device Manager, locate the network adapter, right-click, and choose "Update Driver Software."
      • Browse to the location where you extracted the downloaded driver and see if Windows can install it.
  2. Compatibility Mode:
    • If the driver doesn't install normally, try running the driver installer in Compatibility Mode:
      • Right-click on the driver setup file.
      • Select Properties.
      • Go to the Compatibility tab and check the box for "Run this program in compatibility mode for."
      • Choose an earlier version of Windows compatible with the driver (like Windows Vista).
      • Run the installer.
  3. Driver Update Tools:
    • Use third-party driver update tools that can automatically scan and update drivers.
  4. Alternative Driver Sources:
    • Look for alternative driver sources online, such as driver repositories or forums where users share modified drivers for legacy devices.

      Performance Issue with Windows 7:

    • Windows 7 might seem slower on older hardware due to higher system requirements compared to Windows XP. To improve performance:
    • Disable unnecessary startup programs.
    • Adjust visual effects for better performance.
    • Ensure all drivers are up to date.
    • Consider upgrading to a solid-state drive (SSD) for faster read/write speeds.

      Playing with Windows 7:

    • If you're experimenting with different OSs and boot managers, you can create a dual-boot setup with Windows 7 alongside Linux for your testing purposes. Feel free to try these steps and let us know if you need further assistance! Your experience with Linux should come in handy for troubleshooting and customization. Enjoy exploring Windows 7 on your Dell Latitude D600!
