Before you run any fixes, could you attach the last few days of your WindowsUpdate.log in the Windows directory? You will have to copy it to the desktop and copy. I would like to have the entire log, but it does get fairly long, so possibly you could e-mail it.

The reason I ask is that the fixes may restart your logs and can lose information about what happened prior to the fix being run.

We will see if you are getting the same error as the other thread.

Overall, there are requests for shutdown. It seems then the error occurs and the process is repeated. You might check to see if you have the file \api-ms-win-core.... If not, perhaps the FixIt page Trouble recommended will replace it, or maybe running a System File check would find a problem. I will, tomorrow, look for any other helpful (or not) information online and in your log.

I realize this information may not help, but perhaps someone else will recognize what it means, or give you something to check online. I was hoping for something simple.;)

You might also check the Windows Error Reports to see if any of this shows up.

In Control Panel under Troubleshooting, there is a Windows Update option, but I do not think it has much power.

The error stated seems to be related to an install error, or another install currently in progress, but I found this Microsoft site and it has a reference you might need for .net problems. But it also seems to finish asking for a reboot.

Windows Update error 80070643

Did the Update install or do you show it failed in the Update History? I suppose with the other errors, as you said, nothing is installing.

Currently, Automatic Updates is set for Mon. Aug. 15th @ 3 a.m (again). You could wait for that, or try a reboot to see if anything is installed.

I also found this on Aug 8th at 2 pm and later.

And some of this:

These errors went to the end of the log, so have not been corrected as of the last entry.

I have done a little research and found this thread about a similar problem although a different error number. On page 3, the 5th post down, nz_skater explains how to rename a file so it can be delete or ignored.

It would make sense if some update had attempted to replace the file and could not delete it for some reason, it could cause problems ("POQ Operation DeleteFile OperationData"). But since I am not a programmer, I might be going down the wrong road.

Anyway, something to think about. Make sure you shut your system completely down, just in case that would allow a process to complete.

I think, before I started to do any operations I wasn't sure about, that I would make an image backup of the install, just in case. If it was an update, it might be the last one installed or the first one to fail that might be involved. I do not really know what the operation might fail on one system and not another.

Open Programs and features. Click Microsft Net framework. Click Uninstall/change. In the window, select repair. When it is complete, you should be able to install the updates. It may be neccessary to do it with any other Net framework pieces you have in the rogram and features list, but I think not.

kb2539636 failed for me also
I manually in stalled dotnet4 client
then downloaded the manual install for kb2539636
kb2468871 and kb2533523 also were failing
I also manually installed them
update how shows no updates available

easy way to get to updates view update history; right failed line ; view detail; click more information link

It might also be interesting to note, all the updates listed below installed normally, originally. It is during the reboot where the problem shows up. I believe some files have to be in an offline status to be replaced during an update, so possibly this is where the errors are occuring.

I checked the updates and they all say they "Can Request" a reboot.

I also found this about the .Net 4 updates..
unable to install .net framework 4.0 updates

Would it be correct to say .Net 4 or its updates are not downloaded and installed until IE9 has been installed?

This assumes you are not running another .Net 4 program, which I do not even know what they would be.

I just did an update that included the updates being discussed in this thread. I can confirm, the files api-ms-win-core.... were involved in the updates.

This information gives more credibility to the assertion that the files were not accessible during the update and thus causing part of the problem.

If it makes a difference, my "sleep" button had been changed to "shutdown" with the gold shield, so I will submit that a complete shutdown is probably necessary for some installs.

Davehc has solved this problem for me, at least, Thanks Dave
