I have a new HP DV5, the OS is Windows 7 with Vitual XP. I have Dictaphone installed that requires the use of a USB foot pedal. The Foot pedal is plug and play and does not come with software. Windows 7 recognizes the foot pedal and installs. This device does not show in Virtual XP any where. On my previous computer with XP I plugged it in and it recognized it immediately. Hp does not allow for the downgrade to XP and dual booting with XP is almost impossible. Please Help!!!

Solution
It seems like you're facing an issue with the compatibility of the USB foot pedal on Virtual XP within your Windows 7 environment. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot and potentially get the foot pedal working in Virtual XP:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Virtual XP Integration Tools: Ensure that Virtual XP's integration tools are installed. These tools improve the interaction between the host OS (Windows 7) and the virtual machine.
  2. USB Device Detection: Check if the USB foot pedal is being detected by Windows 7 but not passed through to Virtual XP. You might need to manually enable USB device sharing in your virtualization software settings.
  3. Virtual Machine Settings:

It seems like you're facing an issue with the compatibility of the USB foot pedal on Virtual XP within your Windows 7 environment. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot and potentially get the foot pedal working in Virtual XP:

  2. USB Device Detection: Check if the USB foot pedal is being detected by Windows 7 but not passed through to Virtual XP. You might need to manually enable USB device sharing in your virtualization software settings.
  3. Virtual Machine Settings:
    • Check the USB settings in the virtual machine software and ensure that the foot pedal is set to be recognized by the virtual machine.
    • Restart the Virtual XP machine after adjusting settings to apply the changes.
    []Device Manager in Virtual XP:
    • Open Device Manager in Virtual XP and check if the foot pedal appears there with any warnings or errors.
    • If it's listed with a warning, try to update the driver manually.
    [
    ]USB Device Sharing:
    • Some virtualization software allows you to manually attach USB devices to the virtual machine. Explore these settings and try attaching the foot pedal specifically to the Virtual XP machine.
    []Driver Installation:
    • If the foot pedal is not detected at all in Virtual XP, try installing the device driver manually within the virtual machine. You may need to download the driver from the manufacturer's website.
    [
]Reboot Virtual XP: Sometimes a simple reboot of the Virtual XP machine can help in refreshing the device detection process.

    Dual-Booting Consideration:

If the above steps do not work, you may want to explore dual-booting with Windows XP as a last resort. Here are some considerations:
    • Backup your data before attempting to set up a dual-boot configuration.
    • Ensure adequate disk space and partitions for both Windows 7 and Windows XP.
    • Research a reliable dual-boot guide for your specific laptop model to minimize risks.

    Final Thoughts:

While downgrading to Windows XP on your HP DV5 may not be straightforward due to compatibility and driver limitations, exploring the troubleshooting steps mentioned above and, if required, the dual-boot option could potentially help you get the USB foot pedal working in your Virtual XP environment. Feel free to try these steps, and let me know if you encounter any challenges or if you need further assistance!
