Windows 7 Windows Live Messenger issue

It's not really a problem, but it IS a little irritating. On XP, when I click the red "X", messenger goes down to the System Tray, but on Windows 7, it stays on the start menu but has no visible window on the desktop. Messenger v2009 build 14.0.8064.206 is installed on both systems, and the settings are identical. I really don't want it taking up space there if I can help it. When the main window is open, there are two on the Start Menu. Is this intentional?
