Sometime next Friday or Saturday, I'm going to be getting a Nokia Lumia 521. I was wondering if someone could point me to any Windows Phone 8 guides, as I'm a newb. to Windows Phone or any smartphone, in general. I already know how to upgrade it to the Windows Phone 8.1 Preview. Which I plan on doing. I'm also curious on if I can use a regular 64 gb. sd card with it or if it has to be a special sort of sd card ?

I have a 521 which I love. At its' current price point it is a smart phone that is very hard to beat. The only thing missing is a front facing camera which I wouldn't likely use much anyway.
As far as the SD card is concerned the only thing is it must be a micro-SD other than that the faster the better, class 1 through 10 (10 is now commonly referred to as U1 or UHS 1 (Ultra High Speed).
With only 8 gigs native storage the SD card is handy for storing pictures and music and such locally.
This is the one I currently have in my 521 http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-microSDXC-Memory-Adapter-SDSDQU-064G-AFFP-/dp/B009QZH6JS/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1398352981&sr=1-1

I love my 521 too. I have it since a couple of months now. At the time, I started this thread where you may find a lot of useful information on 19 pages.

The setup was really easy. I put in a 32GB Micro SD card Class 10 which is plenty for my purposes. Other than that, it is mainly a matter of finding the right apps. I am waiting with the 8.1 upgrade until it is officially released. The Beta may have bugs and I don't want to be the guinea pig.

Thanks guys. I don't think the 8.1 beta will be a issue. Afterall, I'm running 8.1 Update on both my pc's and they're fine. I'm sure the WP 8.1 beta, is more than likely W 8.1 Update. I'll definitely be reading that thread.

Any news on WP 8.1 release date?
Got a Lumia 1520 RM-937 from amazon last week. I can't wait for 8.1. This one is currently running Black.

In a way, it's already been released. The new Nokia Lumia 630 and 635 come with it pre-installed. The 630 is out now. The 635 next month. Nokia just announced the Nokia Lumia 930 with it. From what I've heard the actual WP 8.1 release is some time in July. It was in WP 8.1 RTM in May.

I haven't used mine in a few weeks. The day I paid my Walmart Family Mobile bill at Walmart. Someone grabbed it off my holder and smashed it. I have to wait until next week and order another one. It's a shame, it was running Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview, since I got it.

To get Windows Phone 8.1 now just go to this site and signup for theWP 8.1 Developer Preview. It's actually the WP 8.1 RTM now. From what I've heard, when they release it to everyone. You'll just need to download the latest Nokia firmware for your phone. Here are the instructions from Nokia on how to get WP 8.1 DP. http://nokiawpblog.com/how-to-get-windows-phone-8-1-developer-preview/#
    Here's Microsoft's link for it. http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/preview-for-developers/178ac8a1-6519-4a0b-960c-038393741e96?signin=true

Thanks for this. I am still getting to know my 1520. If 8.1 is ready for download via carriers, I will get it. But for now, I don't want to install it manually yet until maybe after 30days till the seller warranty is out. But I will check those links! Thanks again.

I heard a little while ago, that it may be officially released today. No they just posted again it's not today. It will be by Monday, as Microsoft stated it would be out before July. I'll bet it get's released Thursay. Tuesday and Thursday are usually when MS does releases. Keep an eye on http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us?SEMID=1&WT.srch=1&ocid=GA_SEM_bing_FAM_PHONE_BRAND_NULL_CORE_Windows phone&wt.mc_id=GA_SEM_bing_FAM_PHONE_BRAND_NULL_CORE_Windows phone , http://www.wpcentral.com and http://www.wmpoweruser.com

It's supposed to officially be released before Monday according to Microsoft. http://www.wmpoweruser.com, thought it might be today. It wasn't, so it will probably happen on Thursday. Tuesday and Thursday seem to be Microsoft's favorite day's.

Nice setup badrobot. Your white case looks a little like my Corsair Carbide. I'd upload a photo, but my Logitech webcam has been acting weird color wise, since upgrading to 8.1 in October. Blue's look green, etc. and none of the setting's fix it. Can't use the Lumia 521's camera (see above).

Thanks. I sure will keep an eye on it. :)

My case is a Thermaltake MS-II Commander Snow Edition.
I would love to see your case. :)

You might want to check out the logitech website and see if the have 8.1 driver for your webcam.

    Cheers!

Here's how it came out with my Logitech webcam. It's a Corsair Carbide 500R White. Kind of hard getting decent pictures of it with the webcam in my hand and using the other hand on the mouse to get the picture.

I believe if you get the Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview, now you're all set. The Black update is the Nokia firmware update. The WP 8.1 Developer Preview has been the WP 8.1 RTM since last month. Sign up for the Developer Preview and then let the phone check for updates until none are found. Then do the same with WP Store app's.

I had the most recent WP 8.1 Developer Preview on my Lumia 521, before it was smashed. They made it the RTM version the last Thursday of April or first Thursday of May. As long as you have the Lumia Black update you're good to go. They frequently update WP 8.1, but that's mostly new capabilities for Cortana. The bug's were worked out of WP 8.1 long ago.
