Windows Server 2012r2 to 2016 Upgrade VM impact

If you've VM's in 2012 R2, does in-place upgrade on the host to server 2016 affect/impact the VM's? If so, what precaution is to be taken to avoid it?

Typically no minus the fact that a reboot will be required and some down time while the upgrade completes. It definitely depends on what is running on the server such as RDS will require removal to complete the upgrade process so there would be work to re-setup RDS
