Recently my Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit HP Laptop computer forgets all of the desktop settings and boots up like it is brand new. All my files and stuff are still there on disk but it has the initial background and desktop settings. If I turn it off and reboot it usually boots up right. This appears random.

Anyone know what might be causing this?

Solution
Gary, It seems like your Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit HP laptop is experiencing a strange issue where it forgets the desktop settings and boots up as if it were brand new. This could be caused by several factors. Here are some common reasons for this behavior and suggestions for how to address them: 1. Corrupted User Profile: Your user profile might be corrupted, causing Windows to load a temporary profile instead of your original one. - Solution: Create a new user account and transfer your files to it. You may also try fixing the user profile by editing the registry, but this can be risky if not done correctly. 2. Corrupted System Files: System files that control the desktop settings could be corrupted. - Solution...

You may also try fixing the user profile by editing the registry, but this can be risky if not done correctly. 2. Corrupted System Files: System files that control the desktop settings could be corrupted. - Solution: Run a System File Checker (SFC) scan to repair corrupted system files. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and type sfc /scannow. 3. Faulty Hard Drive: If the hard drive is failing, it could lead to issues with saving and retaining settings. - Solution: Run a disk check to scan for and repair hard drive errors. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and type chkdsk /f /r. 4. Windows Updates: Updates can sometimes cause conflicts that affect system settings. - Solution: Check for Windows updates and install any pending updates. Sometimes, updating the system resolves underlying issues. 5. Third-Party Software: Certain software or applications could be interfering with the system settings. - Solution: Try booting into Safe Mode to see if the issue persists. If it doesn't, it could indicate a third-party software problem. 6. Power Options: Improperly configured power settings might result in the system not saving the settings correctly. - Solution: Check your power settings and ensure that the settings do not interfere with how the system saves and restores desktop settings. If none of these solutions work, a more in-depth analysis may be necessary. Do you experience any error messages when this issue occurs, or does it happen randomly without any warnings?
