A “DisplayPort No Signal” message means the monitor is powered but is not receiving a usable video connection on the selected DisplayPort input. It does not by itself prove that Windows, the graphics driver, or the monitor has failed. The quickest fix is to isolate the connection first, then repair Windows settings or drivers only if the hardware link works.

Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 monitor guidance starts in the same place: reseat or replace the cable, remove accessories such as docks and adapters, and test the display on another system where possible. Intel and Dell give similar advice, and for good reason: Windows cannot reliably detect or configure a display until the GPU and monitor have completed their low-level connection handshake.

Do these steps in order. Changing drivers before testing the cable, port, input selection, and monitor power state can turn a simple connection problem into a longer recovery job.

Use the monitor’s physical controls to open its on-screen menu and select the exact input in use: DisplayPort, DP 1, DP 2, USB-C, or another label used by that monitor. Do not assume automatic input switching worked. A monitor set to HDMI can correctly report “No Signal” while a working DisplayPort cable is connected.

Then check the monitor itself:

  • Make sure its power light is on and that it is not in a deep sleep or power-saving state.
  • Disconnect the DisplayPort cable from the PC. Many monitors will show their own “No DP cable” or no-input message when the cable is removed. That proves the panel and its on-screen display are functioning, but it does not prove the DisplayPort port is good.
  • Reconnect the cable firmly at both ends. DisplayPort plugs often have a latch, and a connector that feels inserted can still be slightly loose.
  • Inspect the cable ends and ports for bent contacts, debris, damage, or strain from a sharply bent cable.

If the monitor has more than one DisplayPort input, try the other one. If it has HDMI as well, a temporary HDMI connection can be useful for getting a picture while you troubleshoot DisplayPort; it is a diagnostic step, not proof that the DisplayPort problem is a Windows setting.

Dell’s monitor documentation also recommends a simple but revealing test: disconnect the video cable and see whether the monitor can display its own self-test or no-cable warning. If it cannot show its own menu or warning screen, stop troubleshooting Windows. The monitor or its power supply needs attention first.

Remove the cable, adapter, and dock variables​

Turn off the PC and monitor. Unplug the monitor’s power cable for at least 30 seconds, then reconnect it. While it is disconnected, remove the DisplayPort cable from both devices. Start the monitor, select DisplayPort as its input, then boot the PC and reconnect the cable.

This reset matters because DisplayPort uses a connection negotiation process involving hot-plug detection and the monitor’s capability data. Windows reads that data, called EDID—Extended Display Identification Data—to learn the monitor’s identity, resolutions, refresh rates, and other supported modes. A cable, adapter, dock, GPU port, or monitor that fails to complete that exchange can leave Windows with no display to configure.

Test the simplest possible setup:

  1. Connect one monitor directly from the PC’s DisplayPort output to the monitor’s DisplayPort input.
  2. Remove USB-C hubs, Thunderbolt docks, KVM switches, daisy-chain displays, signal extenders, and display splitters.
  3. Use a known-good DisplayPort cable, preferably one that already works with another monitor.
  4. Try a different DisplayPort output on the GPU and, if available, a different DisplayPort monitor.

Intel specifically recommends trying a direct connection instead of an adapter or dongle when an external screen is not detected. This is particularly important with USB-C: a USB-C connector only carries video when the computer and port support DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt, or USB4 video output. A charging-capable USB-C port is not automatically a display-output port.

Adapters introduce another frequent trap. Dell notes that many video adapters are one-way devices. A cable advertised as “DisplayPort to HDMI” normally means a DisplayPort source on the PC and HDMI input on the monitor; reversing it may produce no picture at all. Confirm the source and display direction printed on the adapter or its documentation before replacing drivers.

Desktop users should also check where the cable is connected. If the computer has a separate NVIDIA GeForce, AMD Radeon, or Intel Arc graphics card, connect the monitor to the ports on that card—not to the motherboard video outputs. Motherboard ports may be disabled when a discrete GPU is installed, or they may be driven by a different graphics subsystem.


Separate a Windows problem from a pre-boot video problem​

Watch the display from the moment the PC turns on. If the monitor never shows a manufacturer logo, BIOS or UEFI screen, spinning Windows indicator, or sign-in image, the problem is probably outside normal Windows configuration. Continue testing the monitor, cable, port, adapter, dock, and graphics hardware.

An important exception applies to some older NVIDIA graphics cards used with DisplayPort 1.3 or 1.4 monitors. NVIDIA has published a DisplayPort firmware updater for certain cards because affected systems may show a blank screen during boot or hang until the operating system loads. If video appears only once Windows has begun loading, check NVIDIA’s official support material for the precise GPU families supported by that firmware tool. Do not run GPU firmware intended for a different card.

If you can see Windows on a laptop panel, another monitor, or through a temporary HDMI connection, then the remaining steps target Windows display output and drivers. If the DisplayPort monitor stays dark but Windows starts normally, use the working screen rather than repeatedly force-shutting down the PC.

Make Windows send an image to the display​

First press Windows+P. Select Extend if you want the DisplayPort monitor to be an additional screen, or select Second screen only if it should be the only active display. A PC set to “PC screen only” can leave a properly connected external monitor showing no signal.

If you cannot see the projection panel clearly, press Windows+P, press P again to move through the modes, then press Enter. Wait several seconds between attempts; Windows must apply the new display topology.

Next, open Settings > System > Display. Under Multiple displays, choose Detect. Microsoft includes this control in its external-monitor setup instructions for both Windows 11 and Windows 10. If Windows detects the monitor, select it and set a conservative mode first: its native resolution at 60 Hz. After it remains stable, raise the refresh rate in Settings > System > Display > Advanced display if the monitor and cable support it.

This is more than a cosmetic setting. High refresh rates and high resolutions demand more bandwidth, and a marginal cable, adapter, or dock can fail only at the more demanding mode. If a screen works at 60 Hz but disappears at 144 Hz, 165 Hz, or higher, treat the connection path as suspect before blaming Windows.

For a previously working display that suddenly went black, press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B. Microsoft documents this shortcut as a way to reset or wake the graphics driver. You may hear a beep and see connected screens flicker. It will not repair a damaged cable, but it can restore output when the driver has stalled.

Repair the graphics driver without installing random utilities​

Open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, and note the exact GPU name. This determines whether the correct driver comes from the PC maker, NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. On laptops and business desktops, start with the system manufacturer’s driver package when one is available; those packages may include device-specific power, graphics-switching, dock, or firmware components.

Check Windows Update as well. In Windows 11, go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates and review available driver updates. In Windows 10, use Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, then look for View optional updates. Microsoft emphasizes that optional driver updates are not installed automatically.

If the fault began immediately after a graphics-driver update, open the adapter’s Properties in Device Manager, choose the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if the option is available. Restart and test DisplayPort again. A rollback is preferable to guessing at older packages because it returns the machine to the driver that Windows recorded as its prior state.

If rollback is unavailable or does not help, reinstall the driver:

  1. In Device Manager, right-click the graphics adapter and choose Uninstall device.
  2. If Windows offers an option to remove the driver software, select it only after you have identified where to obtain the correct replacement driver.
  3. Restart the PC.
  4. Install the current driver from Windows Update or the PC/GPU manufacturer, then restart again.

Microsoft’s own external-monitor troubleshooting sequence includes driver rollback and reinstall after hardware checks. Avoid third-party “driver updater” tools. They often identify a generic component correctly but install a package that does not account for a laptop’s hybrid graphics design, dock, or OEM display configuration.

If you have no usable screen after a driver change, enter Windows Safe Mode using Windows Recovery and roll back or reinstall the driver there. Microsoft’s blank-screen recovery guidance identifies Safe Mode as the appropriate path when a normal graphics driver prevents a usable display.


Treat docks and multi-monitor chains as their own system​

A monitor connected through a dock has more failure points than one connected directly: the laptop’s USB-C or Thunderbolt port, the host cable, dock power, dock firmware, graphics driver, dock display outputs, and the monitor cable. Test a direct DisplayPort or USB-C-to-DisplayPort connection before resetting Windows.

If the direct connection works and the dock does not, update the dock’s firmware and driver package from its manufacturer, verify that the dock has its original power adapter, and check its documented monitor limits. Microsoft also warns that a basic display splitter duplicates one signal; it does not create two independently extendable desktops. Multi-monitor setups may require a dock, a GPU that supports the intended number of screens, or a technology specifically designed for multiple outputs.

For DisplayPort daisy chaining, open the monitor’s menu and verify whether Multi-Stream Transport, often labeled MST, is enabled only where needed. Incorrect MST settings can confuse a chain, especially when one monitor is connected through another. Test with one direct monitor before rebuilding the chain.

Windows 10 users should keep one support reality in mind: Microsoft ended free Windows Update security fixes and technical support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. The diagnostics above still apply to Windows 10 systems, but a persistent issue on an unsupported installation is a reason to obtain current OEM graphics and dock drivers carefully—and to plan migration rather than expecting ongoing operating-system fixes.

A DisplayPort monitor that works directly with a known-good cable but fails only through one port, dock, adapter, or GPU output has already identified the component worth replacing or updating. A monitor that never shows pre-boot video after those tests points to the physical display chain; one that appears during boot but disappears in Windows points to projection mode, a selected video mode, or the graphics driver.
