I have Windows 10 as my main operating system. What I am not sure of is would I be able to run Win 10 in the Windows Insider on a VM without it having any affect on my main system. I mean if down the road I decided to leave the insider would my main operating system which I upgraded from reserving my copy through Microsoft still be activated.

I'm fairly sure this wil give zero problems !
I would use another MS-account than on your main system, just to be sure...

Doing that now WIN 10 upgrade as base and WIN10 insider in VBOX, no issues yet.
