Seems like they've already been doing this to some degree. Which was the case with our VPN equipment. A MS update which really contained 8 updates was breaking the authentication and it came down to remove the update or no VPNs. Luckily we were able to determine what the issue was which was two crypto ciphers were breaking the authentication. After removing the ciphers problem solved.

thanks for the heads up Davehc, as i understand it the patches will be changing to monthly and cumulative now instead of the current patch Tuesday but as to Microsoft changing windows 7 (8.1) to inherit the wx system of forcing updates with no option to opt out is still unclear
