Is there a way to enable in Windows 7, system Icons for Wireless and Wired network adapters, like the ones in XP (where you can see if connected (blinking lights), or disconnected (red X)?

Solution
YES & in 7 should be there. by default, on the Taskbar by the Speaker & Action Centre icons. However, if you Rt Click on the Taskbar & > Properties & @ the Taskbar tab in the centre is Notification area, hit Customize button; there is a list of various (available) Icons & their selectable Behaviors, including for Network connectivity indicators, wired & or wireless.

Cheers,
Drew

I managed to display the Wireless connection, but the Wired connection is not available when you try to edit your notification icons.
