So why is it that Microsoft in their wisdom give FREE updates to Windows 10, but you still have to pay over $100 for a Windows 8.1 Pro pack update...
Am I missing something or what?
Look forward to peoples thoughts etc

I've seen 8.1 pro around for far less than $100... I'd recommend you also shop around for a w7 sp1 pro then upgrade that if you want WX pro on the cheap. I needed pro for hyper-v back when 8.1 first came out and considered the money well spent but perhaps networking V-machines isn't your thing?
