I have 6 (2 internal, 4 external) hard drives, 2 CD DVD drives and one of those drives that read every kind of media card.
My external drives don't show in Widows Explorer unless they are turned on and they are always off unless I'm using them.
So it normally shows my 2 internal drives and...
Step 1: I insert a USB stick
Step 2: copy something FROM it to my hdd
Step 3: I right-click the safely remove icon from the system tray
Step 4: no USB devices are listed..... only the "open devices and printers" button is listed

When I go into my computer I see: OS (C:), DVD RW Drive (E:) and then the drive that doesn't exist Removable Drive (G:) and I don't have an external HDD attached just my printer and that has never shown up for my printer.

As you may have noticed, hard not to, but if when in windows explorer (WE) and you have selected a removable entitiy (cd, dvd, CF card, etc) and you 'eject' or remove it, the windows explorer window closes.

I have been having trouble getting either of my two plug and play removable hard drive’s to function, Vista asks me to install the driver software and, seeming as it plug and play, I have none.
