Windows 7 a new odd behavior

so, i have my most frequently-used programs pinned to the taskbar.

if i open one, the icon gets pushed a little to the front and offers an Aero preview.

this stopped working for the Thunderbird icon.

now, when i open it, it opens a brand new additional icon to the far right.

not the end of the world, but it bothers me.

any ideas?

Unpin the Thunderbird icon from the taskbar, then run Thunderbird from the Start Menu and pin the resulting Thunderbird icon to the taskbar. I had this happen to both Firefox and Thunderbird.
