I had windows 7 installed on my machine and because of a virus infection, I had to format my C: drive and reinstall the operating system.

The disc seems to install windows 7 fine, but then when I go to start windows, nothing happens. The 'starting windows screen' appears but then it just leaves a blank black screen with the mouse cursor.

I tried again with all external usb drives/cams taken out and also ran a memory diagnostic, but it didn't help.

What could be the problem?

Solution
Having issues with a blank black screen after the 'starting windows' screen can be frustrating. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to address this problem:

1. Check for Hardware Issues:

  • Disconnect External Devices: It's good that you already tried this, but ensure that all external USB drives, cameras, printers, etc., are disconnected.
  • Reset BIOS: Try resetting the BIOS settings to default.
  • Check Hardware Compatibility: Ensure that all the hardware components are compatible with Windows 7.

    2. Boot Options:

  • Boot into Safe Mode: Try booting into Safe Mode by pressing F8 during startup.

  • Boot into Safe Mode: Try booting into Safe Mode by pressing F8 during startup.
  • Last Known Good Configuration: Attempt to load the last known good configuration.

    3. Repair Windows Installation:

  • Use the Windows 7 installation disk to perform a repair installation. This can fix corrupted system files.

    4. Check Disk for Errors:

  • Run a disk check using the Command Prompt from the installation disk. Execute chkdsk /f /r to scan and repair disk errors.

    5. System Restore:

  • If you have any restore points, consider using System Restore to revert to a point before the virus infection.

    6. Reinstall Windows 7:

  • If none of the above steps work, consider reinstalling Windows 7 again but ensure that you follow the installation steps correctly.

    7. Additional Solutions:

  • Update Graphics Drivers: Outdated or corrupt graphics drivers can cause such issues.
  • Run System File Checker (SFC): Use sfc /scannow command in Command Prompt to check for and repair corrupted system files.
  • Check for Malware: After installing Windows, ensure to scan the system for any lingering malware. If the issue persists after trying these steps, it might indicate a more complex problem with the system or hardware. If you can provide more details or error messages, it would be helpful in further troubleshooting.
