i'm using windows 7 ultimate upgraded from vista home basic,
i am able to read dual layer disks which have content on them, but when i insert a blank dual layer disk,it is not being recognised.i had no issues reading from vista, problem started immediately following installation of windows 7.

What should i do?

Solution
sometimes you need to flash firmware on older dvd drives for compatibilty fixes on certain brands of discs...or Os's be careful as doing so can totally brake the drive, also check cables and power is correctly attached, and very last idea would be a lens cleaner.

I assume that you ultimately want to write to the disk. Have you tried any 3rd party software, e.g. Nero? You didn't mention what you were using to burn to the DL disk.

we all generally agree that upgrade is the wrong route to take.

it leaves hundreds of useless files on your system and can cause conflicts.

I'd suggest you perform a "clean" install

Be aware, you'll have to re-install all your 3rd party apps.

Simply write down the names so you'll know what to re-install.

Drew,

If I understand you correctly, I have to disagree.

There are no registry entries for the 3rd party apps when you re-install.

A single executable with no install will work, such as apps from SysInternals.

Am I reading this correctly?

Sorry,

i thought you were referring to the Program Files directory.

I'd would even go so far as to get a second hard drive for imaging and backups.
