Windows 7 Blue or black screen when gaming

Specs:
Windows 7 (x86) installed on a Raid0 array, Intel E8400 (stock), Asus P5K-E, 4x1GB OCZ ram (@800MHz, 2.1V), Ati HD5770 graphics card, Sonata case (550 W p/s)

Occasionally when gaming, my PC crashes. 60% of the time, the display gets distorted for a fraction of a second, then the monitor enters standby. Any audio that was playing loops endlessly. The computer becomes completely unresponsive (does not even toggle capslock/numlock leds) and requires a hard restart. 40% of the time, I get a BSoD and a mini dump is created. No corresponding entries appear in the Event Logs.

These crashes occur during transitions (e.g., at the end of a cutscene, at the end of a load screen, or as I move from one room in the environment to another), but not during regular gameplay. Also, the crashes are non-existent with older games, like Doom3, but quite frequent on MassEffect2 and CoD: Black Ops.

When gaming, CPU and GPU temperatures are in the high 50s. A 3-pass Memtest did not reveal any memory errors. SFC verified all system files. I also had this problem with my previous video card, an Ati 2600XT, but the crashes were less frequent.

I'll be replacing my Raid0 array with an SSD in the new year. So any solutions involving reinstallation of Windows will have to wait until then. The system is fine when not gaming (and I don't have a lot of time for gaming at the moment). However, I would appreciate any insight you have in identifying the specific cause of these crashes.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there.

Google for the Symantec uninstall tool and use it in safe mode.

Reboot and install MSE.

Enjoy.

You should also visit Logitech's site and update all drivers for everything you have from them.

Thanks, TorrentG for the advice. I'll make those changes when I reinstall my OS. In the meantime, I'm still open to exploring other reasons for my crashes.

Why would you want to uninstall Symantec? One of your recent crashes was caused by it, right when you were playing MassEffect, take a look:

120110-39702-01.dmp
MEMORY_MANAGEMENT (1a)
PROCESS_NAME: MassEffect2.exe
MODULE_NAME: SYMEVENT
FAILURE_BUCKET_ID: 0x1a_41284_SYMEVENT+14479

In a case of a BSOD, Symantec is recommended to uninstall even if it's not the direct causer of the crash. It's quite notorious.

So:

Link Removed due to 404 Error

For now, replace it with MSE:

That's a directx file, and that's why in your case you should update your Logitech Setpoint:
