I have a Toshiba L455 (Windows 7 x64) and everytime I put it to sleep manually, it seems as if only the monitor goes to sleep. All the status lights (wifi, HDD activity) remain on, but my laptop won't come back to sleep despite all attempts. The only way to shut it down or get any feedback from it is to shut it down by holding the power button down. However, when I set it to go to sleep in X number of minutes through power options, it goes to sleep and wakes up fine. When I put to "sleep" manually and come back later, it's turned off. It apparently BSOD'ed and then shutdown. It brings up the "Windows has recovered from an unexpected solution" dialog box when I power it back up. My dump files are attached. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Solution
It actually goes to sleep and wakes up properly now, with no BSOD’s in sight. Thanks so much! I'll do some further testing though to confirm the BSOD's or lack thereof. The problem now, though, is that the status lights on the computer don’t actually indicate that’s it sleeping. They’re the same as if they are when the computer is running normally. I’m not sure whether there is a fix for this or not. Maybe Toshiba support would be a better fit for that one, but if you have any suggestions, that’d be great. Thanks again for all your help.

I have the Realtek RTL8187B. The one updated on January 25th isn't for my model. Should I update it with that driver anyway?

You've fixed one of the two problems. The Realtek lan is not updated yet. Install this and then keep us updated please. This should do it:

Link Removed

I'm not completely sure this is the correct driver, but 99%. If you have crashes, post and I'll see if it in fact was updated.

Solution
You're welcome.

Visit Toshiba's site for your model. Install the latest bios and install the latest power management driver (package).

If there's a ValueAdded Package driver installation for it, install that too.

Uh oh. The sleep only worked properly for the one time. A restart led to it working improperly again. I'm not sure about whether a BSOD occurs yet, but I'll see. I'll install the latest BIOS, but for the power management driver, is that Toshiba eco utility? My model isn't listed in the supported models for that though. I've already installed the ValueAdded package since you asked me a bunch of other times before this.

UPDATE

I tried installing the eco utility, but it said my BIOS wasn't supported. I'll try updating the BIOS. What's really interesting is that, in the BIOS changelog, it mentions something about "fixing a Realtek WLAN problem." Also, a driver for the Realtek RTL8187B has showed up in Windows Update that is more recent than the one I have. Mine is from 11/5/2009 for some odd reason (I though we just updated it!) and the one on Windows Update says it is from March 2010. I'm assuming I should hit ignore mainly due cautions about installing through windows update stated a little bit above. I'll update the BIOS and see from there.

Yep, update the bios.

In this instance, as long as you're sure the date is newer on that wireless Realtek driver from Windows Update, it would be good to install it.

It's newer than what your laptop manufacturer has then, and since I'm telling ya this is alright to do (lol), please install it.

I just updated the Realtek driver from Windows update and it updated smoothly, changing the driver date in device manager to 3/31/10. I have to wait a bit on updating the BIOS since I need to pick up a CD to do the BIOS update (updates from within Windows have failed me one too many times). I'll keep you posted. Thanks.

I updated the BIOS, but it BSOD’d again. The dump files are attached. Maybe this will explain why it only properly went to sleep one time and then went crazy on us again.

You have some unknown issue with networking on your machine. The brand new Realtek lan driver which is tested perfectly well that you installed is causing the bsods. That 100% means the issue is on your end somehow.

Uninstall Connectify: connctfy connctfy.sys Thu May 27 05:19:35 2010

Then navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers to delete adfs.sys and PxHlpa64.sys. Reboot.

Suggest to scan for malware with Malwarebytes after updating definitions. Let it remove all it finds.

Then open an elevated command prompt and run these commands one at a time:

netsh winsock reset

netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

Then reboot.

If issues persist, I would clean install Windows to solve the issue because some unknown software you might have installed and uninstalled in the past is causing problems.

Or it could be a physical hardware issue instead. Following all this will give you the best chances.

I did all the things you requested in addition to sorting my drivers by date modified and deleting the ones that were installed on around the date I was experiencing the problem. I uninstalled Hotspot Shield and Virtual Router (similar to Connectify). The sleep issue is totally resolved, with no BSOD's anywhere. Thanks a lot! There is however, a different problem, which I a lot smaller, I think. Every one minute of no interaction with the computer, the display goes black. It doesn't turn off, but just shows black. When I move the mouse or hit a key, the monitor returns normally. I've checked all the power settings and reinstalled the video driver. Any other suggestions?

Thanks. That fixed that problem. I know that you probably don't want to hear another thing from me right now, but since updating the BIOS my CD/DVD drive has been complaining about missing a driver. It's an LG HL-DT-ST GT20N. Not sure about the brand. I haven't been able to find a driver through Windows Update or otherwise. I found a driver for it (Link Removed - Invalid URL), but the program doesn't show my drive in order for me to be able to upgrade it. I've looked at the Toshiba site and I couldn't find any drivers for it.

This will fix it:

  1. Click Start

    Link Removed
, and then click All Programs.
  2. Click Accessories, and then click Run.
  3. Type regedit, and then click OK.

    Link Removed
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
  4. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  5. In the right pane, click UpperFilters.
  6. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  7. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
  8. In the right pane, click LowerFilters.
  9. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  10. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
  11. Exit Registry Editor.
  12. Restart the computer.

Thanks for all the help. My computer's working great now. It required some fiddling with registry values to get iTunes working again. (It needed the UpperFilters key to be changed to something different.) Thanks again.
