Hello,
BSOD or black screen when it left sleep mode.

My investigations :

-The system resumes from sleep mode perfectly if I remove the MSI GTX660 twin frozr 3 and use the integrated Intel HD2500.

-memory pass the memtest86 (several passes) with XMP profile 1 settings

-with the GTX660, sometimes returning from sleep leads to a black screen, sometimes (often) a BSOD with "driver verifier..." message, sometimes I get the "graphic driver stopped responding and has recovered" message under the win8 desktop.

-I tried nVidia drivers WHQL 306.97, 310.90 and beta 313.96, same effects.

I only get issues when leaving sleep mode. The system works perfectly elsewhere (under load, in game and so on).

Sorry for my english

Hi,

I've re-installed the dmp file viewer so was able to go over your dmp files.

I notice you have Rivatuner running:

Rt630x64.sys Wed Oct 19 13:12:55 2011

Please uninstall until we determine the cause of your issues as Rivatuner can cause bsod's under certain circumstances.

Please update your graphic drivers to this version:

NVIDIA DRIVERS 310.90WHQL

Turn off driver verifier by opening an cmd prompt and typing:

verifier/reset

Then reboot.

Please post back if the issues continue.
Please turn Driver Verifier off and leave it off. DO NOT start it again.
1) It will not give any further info - it continuously blames the video
2) The purpose of Driver Verifier is to cause the drivers to crash - so as long as you run it, the more likely you are to suffer from BSOD's
3) The routines that Driver Verifier uses will cause your system to be slower than usual.

When installing the AMD card, be sure to remove the NVidia drivers and install the latest AMD drivers.
Also, based on your statement about the onboard card working fine - that's another sign that the problem is with your video card (or it's slot).

I did not stop driver verifier? I will check...

Part 1:
I installed the nvidia GTX660 in the old PC. It's a vista 32 bits core2duo.
NO BSOD! But each time I get the message "...driver has recovered successfully...nvlddmkm..."in the notification desktop bar but it works. So my video card has some difficulties to properly resume from sleep.
I checked in the bios of this old PC, there is an option to recover VGA BIOS from sleep to resume S3. I activated it but it did not change anything. Note that I read some users complaining a resume from sleep problem with some nvidia 660/ti/670. Somebody had this issue with the MSI GTX660 TF OC and a gigabyte motherboead. He changed it for an EVGA and stil had the issue. He ended with a replacement of the motherboard for another brand.
Perhaps it is a matter of compatibility with the MB bios. MSI provides a new BIOS for the graphic card for those having a black screen issue with no display (with dual bios motherboards if I undersand) but my problem is different and my graphic card seems to already have a later bios.

Part 2: Now I have to try the old AMD Sapphire 4670 in my new ITX. I feel it will work flawlessly ...
Done, indeed it works flawlessly!

My 660 resume from sleep with the "driver did not respond. It has been successfully recovered" on the old PC with vista 32 bits. On my new computer, the same video card resume from sleep with either :
-the "graphic driver did not respond, it has recover..." notification
-BSOD

Usasma, I don't understand because driver verifier is off, I checked. No driver is verified but the BSOD I get are no longer related to "driver verifier has detected violation", now the BSOD is "DPC watchdog violation".

Maybe it a matter of BIOS 'motherboard and/or VGA card). There is an incompatibility for some reason.
Maybe should I test the bios provided by MSI for my card? Link Removed
Except this resume from sleep issue, this card is a beast: 58°C max, silent, 130W max, my sample is clocked at 1254MHz in Unigine benchs (by MSI, I do not OC myself). It never crashed in game or in use, but like a lot of people it doesn't like to wake up ;)

Oops apologies for my prior post. I mistook a Realtek driver for the afterburner one. (Thanks John) I really should wake up properly before reading these dmp files.

Free coffee at Summit!

the message "...driver has recovered successfully...nvlddmkm..."
This is actually a form of BSOD (it's usually a STOP 0x117 (STOP 0x00000117: VIDEO_TDR_TIMEOUT_DETECTED) error. I'm still a bit fuzzy about this - but this (the GTX660) is the one that was giving problems in the original system. If that is so, then it's possible that the STOP 0x117 error is also due to hardware.

But the key here is in trying the known-good AMD card in the original system. If you:
- remove the NVidia drivers
- install the AMD card
- install the latest AMD drivers
then there shouldn't be a problem if our assumptions are correct (that the nVidia card is to blame).

As for the Driver Verifier issues - the memory dumps (included in my previous post) show that all the memory dumps on 17 Feb were Driver Verifier enabled
Search for this string in the code box just after the Analysis heading: DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION (c4)
If verifier.exe shows that it's off, you'll have to check the registry to see if the settings are removed from there.
