Windows 7 can not access my external HDD from new computer

I can see the usb Hard drive on all the lists. my computer and the device manager but it does not show any volume and when I go to click on the icon to ppull it up the drive the task par just shows a very slow progress on teh green line and never stops searching. any clue on what to do?

This is the old HD from my old computer a 40G maxtor in a new external case. The computer sees it as drive G:

It is marked on the device manager as mass storage device and explorer as local disk (G

Have you tried other ports to plug the Mass Stage Device into.

When you say old, exactly how old is the drive?

The drive is a Maxtor 6 about 10 years old

That funny, Maxtor's usually have a life of about 5 years.

I'm still wondering if he has tried the device on another system to determine if it works. If it got too old and died, there is probably nothing Windows 7 can do to revive it. If it works on another system then its worth the effort to figure out how to get his system to use it.

I get the only response from the windows 7 puter, the others do not even see it
