I'm locked out of my 1.5TB Maxtor basics USB desktop drive, with the above notification. There's no access at all to the volume, which shows as 0 bytes in size, although the drive is shared and appears to have the required security permissions (Admin and user rights). I have tried it from 2 different Win7 partitions, and it reads fine under XP. What gives? I need help!

Solution
It sounds like your Maxtor Basics USB desktop drive might have encountered a file system corruption issue. When a drive shows up as 0 bytes in size, it usually indicates a problem with the file system metadata which is responsible for storing information about the files and folders on the drive. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially fix this issue:

Steps to Fix the Locked Out 1.5TB Maxtor Basics USB Desktop Drive Issue:

  1. Check Disk Management:
    • Go to Disk Management by right-clicking on "Computer" or "This PC" and selecting "Manage" -> "Disk Management".
    • Check if your Maxtor Basics drive is listed there. If it is, note the status of the drive (e.g., RAW, Healthy, Unallocated).

    []Run CHKDSK:
    • Open a Command Prompt with admin rights.
    • Type chkdsk /f X: (replace X with the drive letter of the Maxtor drive) and press Enter.
    • This will attempt to fix any file system errors on the drive.
    [
]Test the Drive on Another Computer:
    • Test the drive on a different Windows 7 computer to see if the issue persists. This will help determine if the problem is specific to your system.
    []Data Recovery Software:
    • If the drive remains inaccessible, consider using data recovery software to try to recover your files before attempting any fixes that might result in data loss.
    [
    ]Format the Drive:
    • As a last resort, if the above steps do not work, you may need to format the drive. This will erase all data on the drive, so make sure to recover important files first.

      Additional Tips:

      • Make sure the drive is not set to "Read-only" mode.
      • Update the USB drivers on your Windows 7 computer.
      • Ensure your antivirus software is not blocking access to the drive.
If none of these steps resolve the issue, it's recommended to seek help from a professional data recovery service. They may have specialized tools and expertise to recover data from a drive with more severe issues. Feel free to try these steps and let me know if you need further assistance!
