Windows 7 gadgets not accessing/showing

So i reformatted to clean up my partitions and start fresh again. clean install, worked great. installed safari instead of firefox, put some gadgets in, installed AVG, and then a windows update. now i can't get into my gadget profile to add/view/uninstall gadgets and my gadgets are all gone off the desktop... any ideas?

D'OH. turning UAC off will not allow me to get into gadgets... thanx
