In explorer, in the folder view on the left, it displays my user name, with a ton of files inside -I don't use it and would like for it not to display those folders there - can it be removed?

When I right click on it and select delete I'm asked if i want to remove the "icon", I say yes, but nothing happens.

The folder with your username is your "home folder"...
It is the default starting point for your personal filing system.
It has to be there.

I don't quite understand your answer. Yes i know its my home folder, I was asking if there wasn't a way to remove it from the folder view in explorer.
Perhaps "folder view" isn't the right expression. Every time I open an explorer window, the left window shows Favorites,Desktop, User(which I'd like to remove), computer, network, control panel

My mistake... sorry about that.
