I've established home workgroup with desktop that runs win7 and laptop on xp. I cannot open the laptop icon on the desktop: the icon on "networks" won't open: it gives error message. How can I open the laptop on the desktop? Is there an internet guide to connect computers that runs win7 with xp?

Solution
Homegroup only works with Windows 7 computers and is not (fully) compatible with XP.

If it shouldn't work, maybe try this way:

1. Windows 7 > Start > Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > View your active networks > Home network that you have set up
2. In the next window, choose "Work network" to switch from a homegroup to a workgroup so your two pcs can communicate with each other
3. Assign the same workgroup name to both PCs and share their folders in windows explorer

Start > Run > type gpedit.msc > Windows Settings under Computer Configuration > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options > Microsoft network client > Send unencrypted password to third-party SMB servers - set it to ENABLED.

Thank you very much. I made the home workgroup. the problem is that the laptop does not always open on the desktop that runs win7, and sometimes the laptop icon does not apper on "networks". what can I do?
