I have a desktop running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

I have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

I have a Windows Home Server on my network.

My desktop and laptop computers are in a homegroup that is hosted by the desktop. When I browse the desktop from the laptop, it works just fine. However, when I try to browse the laptop from the desktop, I keep getting a dialog asking me to "Enter Network Password." Nothing that I enter works. I notice that others have had this problem as well, but I have not seen any solutions posted.

If anyone knows why this happens, or how to fix it, I would really appreciate some input.

Thanks!!

It seems like you are experiencing a common issue with network sharing permissions in a mixed Windows environment. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the "Enter Network Password" dialog issue when trying to access the laptop from the desktop in your homegroup:

Steps to Resolve Network Password Issue:

  1. Ensure Network Discovery is Turned On:
    • Go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change advanced sharing settings.
    • Make sure that network discovery, file and printer sharing, and public folder sharing are turned on for both the laptop and desktop.
    []Check Homegroup Password:
    • Confirm that the homegroup password is the same on both computers. You can check this by going to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Homegroup.
    [
    ]Check Sharing Permissions:
    • Ensure that the shared resources on the laptop have the appropriate permissions set for the homegroup.
[]Use the Correct Username and Password:
    • Try entering the username and password of the laptop when prompted for network authentication. This should typically be the username and password you use to log in to the laptop.
    [
    ]Disable Password Protected Sharing:
    • In the Advanced sharing settings, you can turn off password-protected sharing. This setting allows you to access shared folders without entering a password.
    []Reset Network:
    • Sometimes resetting the network settings on both computers can resolve such issues. You can do this by disabling and re-enabling the network adapters or restarting the computers.
    [
    ]Check Firewall Settings:
    • Make sure that the firewall settings on both computers allow file and printer sharing. You may need to add exceptions for sharing in the firewall settings.

      Additional Tips:

    • Update Windows and Drivers:
    • Ensure that both computers have the latest Windows updates installed along with network drivers.
    • Use a Workgroup instead of a Homegroup:
    • If the issue persists, consider switching from a homegroup to a workgroup for simpler network sharing. By following these steps and ensuring proper network configurations, you should be able to resolve the network password dialog issue and successfully access the laptop from the desktop in your setup. If you encounter any specific errors or challenges during these steps, feel free to provide more details for further assistance.
